Annunciation School to showcase extensive upgrades on Feb. 2

When families visit Annunciation School for open house activities on Thursday, Feb. 2, they should walk away very impressed with recent upgrades and initiatives that have created a new buzz at the Elma elementary school.

Families with young children will be pleased to see Annunciation’s expanded Pre-K program. During the Summer of 2011, a third Pre-K room was opened at the facility. A new Pre-K 4 teacher was also added to help guide participants through this early educational experience.

As families continue their tour of the school, they will experience the new Center for Health Science that also became an exciting reality during the Summer of 2011. The Center is an innovative two-year curriculum, broken down into six trimesters, that offers students a hands-on opportunity to receive health certifications, prepare research projects, explore health career opportunities, and delve into subjects such as safety, fitness, ecology and drug awareness. The classroom was literally rebuilt from the ground up and now features brand new floors, lab tables, technology and much more.

Seventh- and eighth-grade students participating in the Center for Health Science this school year have been on several interesting field trips, including visits to Buffalo General Hospital, Rural Metro Medical Services, Mercy Flight and North Buffalo Medical Park. Several guest speakers have also visited the classroom to share their extensive knowledge and experience with Annunciation students. The program is supported by the Annunciation parish as well as Catholic Health, Independent Health, Kaleida Health and Upstate New York Transplant Services, and is the only one of its kind in Western New York!

Technology has also been upgraded at Annunciation, where all students enjoy utilizing the spacious computer lab. SMART Board technology is also available in all classrooms and most specialty rooms.

The public is invited to Annunciation’s open house to experience how the school is living up to its motto: Touching hearts, teaching minds, transforming lives. The event will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 2.

For additional information, please call 681-1327. Open to children from Pre-K3 through Grade 8, Annunciation currently serves children from the Alden, Alexander, Attica, East Aurora, Cheektowaga, Depew, Iroquois, Lancaster, Orchard Park and West Seneca school districts. Busing is available within a 15-mile radius.

Annunciation School's Center for Health Science.

Annunciation School in Elma today announced the unveiling of a new and unique educational program for seventh- and eighth-grade students that will be introduced to students when they return for classes in September.

The Center for Health Science at Annunciation School will feature an innovative two-year curriculum, broken down into six trimesters, that will offer students a unique hands-on opportunity to receive health certifications, prepare research projects, explore health career opportunities, and delve into subjects such as safety, fitness, ecology and drug awareness.

“This program will be unique to Western New York elementary schools and will build upon our school’s already strong science curriculum,” said Sister Marilyn Ann Dudek, CSSF, principal of Annunciation. “The best part of the program is that we have found ways to incorporate other core educational areas such as language arts, mathematics and physical education. And being hands-on, we’re sure it’s a learning experience that our students will truly appreciate.”

Western New York’s position as a growing hub for health science also played into the decision to create the Center for Health Science at Annunciation School, according to Rev. Eugene Ulrich, pastor.

“As a region, Western New York is undergoing a unique transformation,” said Father Ulrich. “Once known for our grain and steel mills, this community is now on the verge of a huge comeback, thanks, in large part, to a growing health science industry and Buffalo’s rapidly expanding medical corridor. Many of our hospitals and health care facilities are world-renowned for their medical expertise, while educational institutions such as the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences continue to attract the community’s and the world’s brightest minds.”

“We hope that our students, after successfully completing the two-year program, will consider a future in health science as they select high schools and colleges and eventually move into the Western New York workforce,” he added.

Coordinating the program at Annunciation are Leslie Zielinski, the school’s science teacher, and Debbie Kampff, RN, the school’s nurse. Both were instrumental in the development of the program.
