Annunciation School to showcase extensive upgrades on Feb. 2
Annunciation School in Elma today announced the unveiling of a new and unique educational program for seventh- and eighth-grade students that will be introduced to students when they return for classes in September. The Center for Health Science at Annunciation School will feature an innovative two-year curriculum, broken down into six trimesters, that will offer students a unique hands-on opportunity to receive health certifications, prepare research projects, explore health career opportunities, and delve into subjects such as safety, fitness, ecology and drug awareness. “This program will be unique to Western New York elementary schools and will build upon our school’s already strong science curriculum,” said Sister Marilyn Ann Dudek, CSSF, principal of Annunciation. “The best part of the program is that we have found ways to incorporate other core educational areas such as language arts, mathematics and physical education. And being hands-on, we’re sure it’s a learning experience that our students will truly appreciate.” Western New York’s position as a growing hub for health science also played into the decision to create the Center for Health Science at Annunciation School, according to Rev. Eugene Ulrich, pastor. “As a region, Western New York is undergoing a unique transformation,” said Father Ulrich. “Once known for our grain and steel mills, this community is now on the verge of a huge comeback, thanks, in large part, to a growing health science industry and Buffalo’s rapidly expanding medical corridor. Many of our hospitals and health care facilities are world-renowned for their medical expertise, while educational institutions such as the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences continue to attract the community’s and the world’s brightest minds.” “We hope that our students, after successfully completing the two-year program, will consider a future in health science as they select high schools and colleges and eventually move into the Western New York workforce,” he added. Coordinating the program at Annunciation are Leslie Zielinski, the school’s science teacher, and Debbie Kampff, RN, the school’s nurse. Both were instrumental in the development of the program.
